Generating a CSR using IIS 5 / 6

Before installing your SSL Certificate please ensure you have installed your intermediates - Click here for instructions

The following steps will guide you in how to generate a CSR using IIS 5 or 6.

Open Internet Information Services (IIS)

Select the site where you want to enable SSL

Right click on the site and select Properties

Click on the Directory Security tab

Under the Secure Communications section, click Server Certificate

The Web Server Certificate Wizard will start

Click Next

Select the Create a New Certificate option

Click Next

Select the Prepare the request now, but send it later option

Click Next

You will need to enter a Friendly Name for the certificate

Important. You must select the Bit Length as 2048

Click Next

Input the Organization and Organizational Unit

Click Next

Input the Common Name (fully qualified domain name i.e. www.yourdomain.com), This MUST reflect the web site/server’s DNS Name.

Click Next

Input the County/Region, City and State. This information must be correct, Abbreviations will not be accepted.

Click Next

Select where you want the file to be saved and the name of the file. We advise that you create a folder on your desktop and store the CSR in that folder as well as other certificate information which you will require later.

You will now be presented with a summary screen of all information that has been provided, please ensure all information is correct.

The CSR can now be opened in notepad and submitted into the TrustSign certificate portal.
